Striker hopes he has done enough

Peter Crouch is fed up of constantly having to prove himself for England - despite his impressive scoring record.

The Tottenham striker's two goals in the 3-0 win over Belarus took his tally for his country to 18 from 35 matches, better than a goal every other game.

But with coach Fabio Capello likely to name four forwards in his 23-man squad for next year's finals, Crouch is fighting with Carlton Cole and Gabriel Agbonlahor for the final spot, as Wayne Rooney, Emile Heskey and Theo Walcott are all certain to be on the plane to South Africa.

"Have I given the manager a bit of food for thought? People keep asking me that question and I seem to always be saying that," said Crouch. "I am pleased with the way it went against Belarus.

"All I can do when given an opportunity is to try to take it. The goals help and hopefully my performance has given him something to think about.

"But we have got some fantastic competition for places and all I can do is to score goals and hopefully get a chance."

David Beckham - surprisingly named man of the match despite playing only half an hour as a substitute - revealed that he was "95 per cent" certain to return to AC Milan on loan in January.

The former England captain added: "Milan are saying they want me, so I can't see it failing to happen now."
