Shock: AC Milan celebrate scoring against Real Madrid

Champions League review: AC Milan stun Real Madrid at the Bernabéu

22 Oct 2009

Brazilian Alexandre Pato grabbed the winner two minutes from time as AC Milan edged a five-goal thriller at the Bernabeu and joined Real Madrid at the top of Champions League Group C.

Pato blasted home a superb 88th-minute volley to round off a thrilling second period as the Italians fought back from falling a goal behind in the 19th minute to Madrid veteran Raul.

A stunning long-range strike by Andrea Pirlo drew the visitors level before Pato struck his first to put his side ahead. Royston Drenthe equalised after 76 minutes only for Pato to strike again at the back post.

Defeat could yet prove costly for Real as Gabriel Heinze's 69th-minute volley helped Marseille to a 1-0 win at FC Zurich to give the French side their first three points of the campaign.

Carlo Ancelotti's Chelsea stormed towards the next stage by extending their winning run to three straight games in Group D with a 4-0 hammering of Atletico Madrid at Stamford Bridge.

The lively Salomon Kalou opened the scoring in the 41st minute and added another early in the second half. Frank Lampard made it three in the 69th minute and Louis Perea's stoppage-time own goal completed a dismal night for Spain.

To make matters worse for Atletico, a goal in each half from Brazilian striker Hulk helped Porto recover from the early scare of conceding an early Alvaro Pereira own goal to sink Apoel Nicosia 2-1 and move further clear in second place.

Manchester United had Antonio Valencia to thank for maintaining their own 100% record in Group B as the Ecuadorian struck late to sink CSKA Moscow on the Luzhniki Stadium plastic.

Despite a sluggish first half United went in search of a winner and were rewarded four minutes from time when Dimitar Berbatov flicked on Nani's left-wing cross and Valencia turned to bend the ball home.

Qualification for the next stage is now a formality for Sir Alex Ferguson's men after the other game in Group B saw Wolfsburg and Besiktas grind out a goalless draw in which Wolfsburg's Brazilian striker Grafite was sent off.

In Group A, Bordeaux came from behind to claim a drama-filled 2-1 win over Bayern Munich in France and deal a major blow to the Germans' hopes of qualifying for the next stage.

Michael Ciani made amends for scoring a sixth-minute own goal by hitting a close-range equaliser at the right end in the 29th minute, before Bayern's hopes were hit by the dismissal of Thomas Muller.

Marc Planus put Bordeaux in front on 41 minutes but the home side failed to make the game safe as they missed two second-half penalties, the second of which saw Bayern reduced to nine men with the dismissal of Daniel Van Buyten.

The win leaves Bordeaux two points clear at the top of Group A but Juventus kept up the chase thanks to a priceless Giorgio Chiellini header in the 47th minute which was enough to see off Maccabi Haifa in Turin.
