Seeing red: Gary Neville was sent off against Barnsley

Violence mars Manchester United's victory

28 Oct 2009

Barnsley have complained to police after accusing Manchester United fans of causing "substantial damage" at Oakwell during last night's Carling Cup clash.

The incident occurred in the concourse of the north stand before the final whistle, with scenes of violence marring United's 2-0 fourth-round win. A Barnsley spokesman said: "A complaint has been made to the police and we will be taking a look at CCTV footage before we comment further."

Catering staff at Oakwell barricaded themselves in a store room for fear of injury as United fans forced themselves behind the counter.

Barnsley failed to add a second successive Premier League scalp after ousting Burnley in the previous round, as Sir Alex Ferguson's second string marched on into the last eight thanks to goals from Danny Welbeck and Michael Owen.

For once, Ferguson also backed referee Chris Foy's decision to send off skipper Gary Neville (left) for a high tackle on Adam Hammill.

"In the present climate the referee was probably correct," said Ferguson. "We won't be appealing the decision."
