Patrice Evra ready for another show of strength

Patrice Evra is taking nothing for granted as France attempt belatedly to book their place at next summer's World Cup.

The French took a significant step towards South Africa in Dublin on Saturday when Nicolas Anelka's strike gave them a 1-0 first-leg win in the play-off against the Republic of Ireland and set them up perfectly for Wednesday's return in Paris.

However, Manchester United full-back Evra knows there is still work to be done before coach Raymond Domenech can heave a huge sigh of relief and start planning for the finals.

Evra said: “We have only reached half time. On Wednesday, we have a big game. Ireland will come to the Stade de France for a win and we need to be strong again and win that game. It's very important.”

Saturday's game was marred by a skirmish on full-time involving most of the players after French midfielder Lassana Diarra allegedly abused Keith Andrews before refusing to shake his hand.

Meanwhile, France defender Eric Abidal will miss the second leg with a thigh injury.

Lyon midfielder Jeremy Toulalan has also been ruled out. He has not recovered from the hamstring injury which kept him out of the game in Dublin.
