Sergio Aguero

Chelsea ready to step in with a New Year bid for £40m Sergio Aguero

Chelsea are expected to step up their interest in Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero and hope to secure a £40million deal in January.

The club have drawn up a list of possible targets in the next transfer window and Aguero is believed to be one of them. Chelsea have been interested in the 21-year-old Argentina international since last summer and could begin negotiations with Atletico next week.

The Spanish club are struggling in La Liga and have been knocked out of the Champions League. They are also heavily in debt and may need to sell Aguero to ease their financial problems.

Argentina coach Diego Maradona, who is Aguero's father-in-law, believes he should leave Atletico, where his present salary is around £170,000-a-week.
