Diego Maradona performs the Hand of God
Injustice: Diego Maradona performs the Hand of God and in doing so helps Argentina beat England

Controversial goals

19 Nov 2009

France's extra-time equaliser against the Republic of Ireland in Paris last night sent Raymond Domenech's team through to the World Cup finals in South Africa next summer, but it is Thierry Henry's use of his hand in the build-up to William Gallas' goal that has stolen all the headlines.

Here, we look at five other controversial goals involving handball.

Diego Maradona - Argentina v England, World Cup quarter-final, 1986

Maradona's handball is one of the most famous moments in World Cup history. The Argentinian's 'Hand of God' put his side into the lead as he punched the ball past England's Peter Shilton. Tunisian referee Ali Bin Nasser allowed the goal as he thought Maradona had used his head. The brilliant playmaker then scored a superb individual goal to put Argentina two up but that will forever be overshadowed by his earlier actions. Argentina went on to win the game 2-1 before beating Germany in the final in Mexico.

Joe Jordan - Scotland v Wales, World Cup qualifier, 1977

Wales needed to beat the Scots to qualify for the 1978 World Cup finals in Argentina. With the scores tied at 0-0, Jordan handled the ball in the Welsh box but French referee Robert Wurtz awarded a penalty, believing defender David Jones was the offender. Scotland went on to win the game 2-0 and therefore prevented Wales from qualifying.

Stephane Henchoz - Liverpool v Arsenal, FA Cup final, 2001

Somewhat ironically, given yesterday's events, it was Thierry Henry who was wronged at the Millennium Stadium in May 2001. In the first half, Henry rounded Reds goalkeeper Sander Westerveld and looked destined to give Arsenal a 1-0 lead but his shot was blocked by Henchoz's arm. Henry protested but the officials had not seen the incident and play carried on. Arsenal did take the lead but two late goals by Michael Owen sealed victory for the Reds.

Lionel Messi - Barcelona v Espanyol, Primera Division, 2007

Messi, known as 'the new Maradona', earned the wrath of Barcelona's city rivals by using his hand to palm the ball into the goal at the Nou Camp. Barca were behind at the time and the goal kept the Catalan giants in the Primera Division title race, although they eventually lost out to Real Madrid.

Alberto Gilardino - Palermo v Fiorentina, Serie A, 2008

A match between the Serie A rivals exploded when Gilardino used his foreman to open the scoring in Fiorentina's 3-1 victory. The referee did not see the offence and the Italian's celebrations angered Palermo and their fans. After the game, the league's sporting judge viewed videotapes of the incident and the striker was given a two-match suspension.
