Scottish pride: Csaba Laszlo joined Hearts in summer 2008

I'm not Berti Vogts, says Csaba Laszlo

19 Nov 2009

Csaba Laszlo has insisted he is no Berti Vogts and claimed outwitting the former Scotland boss was all too easy.

Hearts manager Laszlo has revealed he would be prepared to talk to the Scottish Football Association about becoming only the second foreigner to take charge of the national team.

The 45-year-old Romanian-born coach is one of a host of names who have been linked with the vacancy since George Burley's sacking on Monday.

The SFA had their fingers burnt when they appointed former Germany boss Vogts back in 2002 and public opinion is divided over whether a foreigner should ever manage Scotland again.

Laszlo was part of the Hungary backroom team when they delivered the latest in a series of humiliating defeats on Vogts towards the end of his reign.

The Hearts boss, who insisted he would only speak to the SFA with his club's permission, said: "Berti Vogts didn't have good results.

"I played against Berti Vogts three times and I always won!

"We played against Scotland and we won here 3-0.

"Afterwards, in Edinburgh, I met somebody and I said, 'We beat Scotland'.

"He told me this was easy."

Laszlo, who was manager of Uganda before joining Hearts in the summer of last year, urged the SFA not to let one bad experience with a foreigner cloud their judgment when drawing up a list of candidates to succeed Burley.

"You must not be scared to take a new manager from abroad," he said.

"England has now a very successful manager, who is Italian; we have in Ireland a very succesful manager, who was very unlucky yesterday.

"With myself, you have a guy who stays in this country and is from abroad and who is never negative. I feel the people appreciate this.

"Maybe people are maybe a little bit afraid to take something which is from the outside.

"A good manager is a good manager in China, is a good manager in America, is a good manager is Germany and is a good manager in Spain or Portugal, indifferent of which language he speaks.

"In football, you have always only one language, which is the most important: success."

Asked whether he had the credentials to be Scotland boss, Laszlo said: "Ask the federation!

"To work in this country for me is an honour. I said that before I took this job and signed the contract.

"I feel like this is my home: my children would like to stay here; my wife is convinced now Edinburgh is nicer than Kampala!

"I think I will stay here in Edinburgh and not in Budapest.

"I would like to see my children finish school here."

Laszlo took issue with Graeme Souness' claim it would not not matter who replaces Burley because the players were not good enough.

"I think Scotland, even if they don't have very good results for the moment, we are not bad and we have a lot of good players," said Laszlo.

"You can't say directly it's indifferent who is the Scotland manager.

"We have some players with which you can be successful.

"If somebody thinks always negative, you don't achieve anything."

He added: "I had the same problem in Uganda.
"They told me this team is one of the worst in this African region, 'Kenya is better, Rwanda is better'.

"We were one of the best teams in this region after two years.

"After I left this team, a lot of people wished to be manager of Uganda.

"The Scottish guy who took them over (Bobby Williamson) is happy to have this team."
