Premier League thrashings

23 Nov 2009

After Spurs's 9-1 thumping of hapless Wigan, we look at some other one-sided Premier League contests.

Manchester United 9 Ipswich 0 - March 1995

Andy Cole led the way with five goals, with Mark Hughes (2), Paul Ince and Roy Keane also netting for United against an Ipswich team who finished bottom at the end of the season.

Newcastle 8 Sheffield Wednesday 0 - September 1999

Alan Shearer bagged five goals - including two penalties - as relegation-bound Wednesday were routed at St James' Park. Aaron Hughes set the ball rolling, while Kieron Dyer and Gary Speed netted in the second half.

Nottingham Forest 1 Manchester United 8 - February 1999

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer came off the bench to fire four goals in the last 10 minutes in this rout of Forest, who went down at the end of the campaign. Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke each got two goals, with Alan Rogers briefly levelling matters for Forest.

Arsenal 7 Everton 0 - May 2005

Dennis Bergkamp scored one and had a hand in three others as fourth-placed Everton were brushed aside by the runners-up. Robert Pires (2), Robin van Persie, Patrick Vieira, Mathieu Flamini and Edu (penalty) completed a memorable night for the Highbury faithful.

Blackburn 7 Nottingham Forest 0 - November 1995

Another Shearer hat-trick against a side who finished in mid-table. Lars Bohinen (2), Mike Newell and Graeme Le Saux also netted.
Manchester United 7 Barnsley 0 - October 1997
Cole's first half hat-trick helped United to a 4-0 lead in Barnsley's one and only Premiership season. Ryan Giggs (2), Paul Scholes and Karel Poborsky were also on target.

Arsenal 7 Middlesbrough 0 - January 2006

Thierry Henry inspired this victory with three goals. Philippe Senderos, Robert Pires, Gilberto Silva and Alexander Hleb also scored.
