Jimmy Bullard and his Hull team-mates
Finger pointing: Jimmy Bullard apes Phil Brown's rant, all he's missing is the fake tan

Great football celebrations

30 Nov 2009

Jimmy Bullard enhanced his reputation as one of football's funny men with his comic reconstruction of Hull boss Phil Brown's infamous on-field team talk at Eastlands last season when he scored on the same ground.

Bullard wagged his finger at a circle of players sat around him in a light-hearted re-enactment of the half-time roasting Brown delivered last season, but the Tigers boss at least saw the funny side as his team claimed an impressive 1-1 draw at Manchester City.

Here we at some of the game's most entertaining goal celebrations.

Paul Gascoigne

Gazza's goal against Scotland at Euro '96 was a classic, but the celebration which followed is almost better known than the strike itself. He lay down on the Wembley turf as his ecstatic team-mates squirted water into his mouth in a re-enactment of the controversial 'dentist's chair' drinking episode during a pre-tournament trip to Hong Kong.

Ian Wright

In September 1998 Wright celebrated scoring for West Ham against Southampton by re-enacting the Paolo di Canio push on referee Paul Alcock which had happened the previous week. Former Arsenal striker Wright was pushed in the chest by team-mate Neil Ruddock before taking a comical tumble to the floor.

Jurgen Klinsmann

The German striker arrived in English football with a reputation as the master of the black art of diving. However, he showed a willingness to make light of it when, after scoring on his Tottenham debut against Sheffield Wednesday in 1994, he produced a stunning full-length dive across the turf.

Gordon Strachan

Perhaps it was the searing heat of Mexico that did it, but Strachan felt the urge to scale the advertising boards after putting Scotland ahead against West Germany in a 1986 World Cup group match. However, the diminutive midfielder, now the manager of Middlesbrough, couldn't quite make it and settled for putting one leg on the top of the board. What followed next was not so funny for Scotland - the West Germans scored twice and Strachan and co were on their way out.

Peter Crouch

The Tottenham forward's gangly frame lends itself well to physical comedy, and he hit the nation's funny bone in England friendlies against Hungary and Jamaica prior to the 2006 World Cup with his own take on the robot dance after scoring.

Craig Bellamy

The Wales forward landed himself in hot water after swinging a golf club in anger at then Liverpool team-mate John Arne Riise, reportedly because the Norwegian would not get involved in a karaoke session during a team training camp in Portugal. Despite facing a fine from the club, Bellamy celebrated an equalising goal against Barcelona in the Nou Camp in February 2007 by taking a swing with an imaginary golf club.

Diego Maradona

The Argentinian superstar appeared to be back to his brilliant best during the 1994 World Cup after years in drug-fuelled decline and his goal celebration against Greece - running up to a television camera with his face contorted in wild rage - amused some and terrified others. When it later emerged the player had tested positive for five variants of the banned stimulant ephedrine, everything seemed to make a little more sense.

Temuri Ketsbaia

The Georgian produced one of the oddest celebrations in the history of the game when he scored for Newcastle against Bolton in January 1998. He first took off his shirt and then appeared to lose his temper when he tried unsuccessfully to take off one of his boots as well. He repeatedly - and quite violently - shrugged off his team-mates' attempts to celebrate with him and started kicking lumps out of an unfortunate advertising board.

perhaps hull would score more goals if they practised scoring rather than practised celebrating?
