Jo joins Galatasaray on loan

22 Jan 2010

Jo has joined Galatasaray on loan from Manchester City until the end of the 2009-10 season, the Turkish club have announced on their official website.

The Brazil striker, who joined City from CSKA Moscow in July 2008 for a fee of around £18million, had been on loan at Barclays Premier League side Everton since August, but was earlier this month reprimanded by boss David Moyes for a breach of club discipline.

The 22-year-old, whose full name is Joao Alves de Assis Silva, now appears set to join former Toffees team-mate Lucas Neill in Istanbul.

A statement on Galatasaray's official website, www.galatasaray.org, read: "Our club have agreed to sign Brazilian Joao Alves de Assis Silva on loan until the end of the season from English Premier League team Manchester City.

"Joao Alves de Assis Silva is welcome and we wish him success in the yellow and red jersey."

Everton later confirmed their association with Jo - a player who had two loan spells at Goodison Park, making a total of 36 appearances and scoring seven goals - was at an end.

A statement on the Toffees' official website, www.evertonfc.com, read: "Brazilian striker Jo has left Everton and returned to Manchester City.

"Jo was then immediately loaned by City to Galatasaray, the Turkish side taking the 22-year-old until the end of the season.

"A season-long loan deal for the player had been agreed between Everton and Manchester City in the summer, but this has been cut short.

"Earlier this month David Moyes revealed that Jo had been suspended by the club for returning to Brazil without permission.

"That sanction proved temporary but Jo's association with Everton has now ended. He joins Lucas Neill in heading from Merseyside to Istanbul during this transfer window.

"He scored twice in 24 appearances this season, following a similar six-month loan spell last term."
