More agony for Anne Keothavong

24 Jun 2009

Anne Keothavong had another miserable day at Wimbledon as she suffered a first-round defeat in the women's doubles.

Less than 24 hours after her tearful exit from the singles, Keothavong and fellow Brit Sarah Borwell lost 6‑2, 6-3 to the third seeds Sam Stosur and Rennae Stubbs. The Australians dominated the first set and although the Brits did better in the second, Borwell was broken twice.

Keothavong will be hoping to avoid an unwanted treble of first-round exits when she pairs up with compatiot Ross Hutchins in the mixed doubles.

Keothavong's straight sets defeat to Austrian Patricia Mayr in the singles was part of a dire day for Britain as Georgie Stoop, Katie O'Brien, Alex Bogdanovic, Joshua Goodall and Dan Evans all bowed out.

The only British woman through to the second round is Elena Baltacha, who today insisted she is good enough to be a top-100 player.

Baltacha started the tournament as the world No106 but should now climb back into the top 100 after a a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over world No33 Alona Bondarenko, of the Ukraine.

The vociferous support of the crowd seemed to settle Baltacha while having the opposite effect on Bondarenko.

“I'd say this is my best win at Wimbledon,” said Baltacha, who next faces Belgian Kirsten Flipkens. “It was lovely. Everyone was getting up and clapping. I had goose pimples pretty much everywhere.”

I used to like her until I found out she was a gooner.
