Robson and Stoop plan upset after digging deep

If proof was needed that fighting qualities do exist in British tennis then it should be provided in tomorrow's second-round women's doubles match between Laura Robson and Georgie Stoop and 16th seeds Svetlana Kuznetsova, of Russia, and French partner Amelie Mauresmo.

Robson and Stoop certainly had to dig deep last night to beat compatriots Jade Curtis and Anna Smith in a thrilling match on No1 Court that lasted three hours.

If they can repeat that performance, an upset could be on the cards.

After winning 6-4, 3-6, 13-11, with the seesaw final set taking 106 minutes to complete, 15-year-old Robson said: "There were four British girls all fighting out there."

She and Stoop were among those British hopefuls who fell at the first hurdle in the singles competition.

But Robson insisted: "We're just pumped for the doubles."

Stoop, aware of the criticism that followed the dismal start to the home challenge, added: "I understand people saying we're not hungry because we do get a lot from the LTA.

"But I don't think it's right. We're all here to win and we all want to do our best."

Kuznetsova and Mauresmo came through in straight sets against the German pairing of Tatjana Malek and Andrea Petkovic.

Jamie Murray's poor run of form continued as he lost in the opening round of the men's doubles with Israel's Jonathan Erlich.

Murray, brother of Andy, and Erlich were no match for eighth seeds Lukasz Kubot, of Poland, and Austrian Oliver Marach, losing 6-4, 6-3, 6-1.

Another British duo, James Auckland and Joshua Goodall, suffered a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 defeat against ninth-seeded veteran pair Wesley Moodie, of South Africa, and Belgium's Dick Norman.
