Britain's interest in the women's competition ended as Elena Baltacha lost 7-5, 6-1 to Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens.

Baltacha went into the match as favourite but form stood for nothing in the first game as Flipkens, just 5ft 5ins tall, surprised Baltacha by crashing down a 101mph ace.

The onus was on Baltacha, the British No2, to stop Flipkens in her tracks and after holding her own serve she achieved the vital breakthrough in the third game.

Flipkens broke back in the sixth game which was also conceded with a weak double fault.

Baltacha's frustrations began to get the better of her as she questioned a number of line calls. And that lack of composure led to Baltacha losing the set 7-5 with another broken serve.

The Briton's game fell apart from there, losing the match in one hour and 17 minutes.
