Reaching out: Roger Federer was in control as he booked his place in the quarter-finals

Federer delivers first-class service to reach quarter-finals

Roger Federer maintained his amazing domination over Robin Soderling today as he confirmed his position as Andy Murray's main obstacle to a first Grand Slam title.

The world No2 booked his place in the quarter-finals with a 6-4,7-6, 7-6 victory - his 11th straight win over the Swede.

Federer won the only break of serve in the match and sealed victory after Soderling double faulted at 5-5 in the third set tie-break.

The Swiss said: "This was a serving contest and so it's hard to judge my form just this match but I have been happy with the way I played in the first week.

"This was a really dangerous match and thank God he served a double fault because it could have been a fourth set."

The match was a repeat of this month's French Open Final, which Federer won in straight sets.

Soderling, perhaps cautious as a result of that defeat, was happy to rally from the base line in the first set.

However, with the score at 4-4, Soderling undermined his good work with a sloppy service game, which Federer capitalised on to earn a break.

The five-time Wimbledon champion went on to wrap up the set in just 33 minutes but the next set was tighter with Soderling taking it to a tie-break.

The contest came alive at this stage with both men hitting vicious top spin forehands but it was Federer who was able to come up with the back-hand winners.

One whipped cross-court effort was taken so early it totally surprised the Swede who did well to hold onto the Swiss master as he went through his repertoire of glorious strokes.

Federer has looked remarkably calm and controlled at this year's championships, something that could be down to finally completing his set of Slam crowns at Roland Garros.

The key moment came on the eight point of the tie break when a low sliced back hand was thumped out by Soderling.

You could see the frustration etched on the Swede's face and the error cost him dearly as he lost the tie-break 7-5.

Soderling, who has lost all 10 of his previous matches against Federer, saved a break point in the second game of the third set before both players again dominated on serve.

Only one point was dropped between them in the next six games before Soderling surprisingly created two break points in the ninth game.

However, the Swede's attacking intentions let him down at the crucial time as he went for too much on his returns and failed to get a ball back in court as Federer held on.

As both players continued to serve with power and accuracy another tie-break was required.

Soderling still believed he could take the match into another set and found himself 5-4 up in the tie break with two serves up his sleeves.

But his hopes were killed by another piece of brilliance from Federer.

Dragged wide, Federer made up the ground and fired back an unreachable cross court top spin forehand that left Soderling totally dejected.

The 24-year-old was deeply affected by this blow and served a double fault to hand Federer match point which he took to seal a place in the last eight after almost two hours of play.
