Make mine a margherita, says Andy Murray

1 Jul 2009

Andy Murray likes his pizza plain and simple, it has been disclosed.

The 22-year-old Scot, who has been criticised in some quarters for a lack of personality, prefers a plain old margherita.

After his five set thriller against Stanislas Wawrinka on Monday night Murray phoned his mother Judy, who was dining at Pizza Express in Wimbledon village, to order takeaway.

And even though the chef was already changed out of his gear and about to head home, he was happy to relight the oven to help out the British tennis hero.

Murray's match against the Swiss 19th seed did not finish until 10.38pm, the latest ever at the tournament.

And after three hours and 57 minutes of intensity Murray was in need of refuelling.

Murray blogged on his Twitter site last night: "Before I forget, thanks a lot to Pizza Express Wimby Village for firing up their ovens after they shut last night just for me. really kind."

Manager Anton Gjoni, 40, said staff were only too happy to prepare the cheese and tomato pizza for their "hero".

"His mother asked us to make a pizza for Andy so we asked the chef to relight the oven.
"The chef was already changed and about to go home and it took the oven about 15 minutes to warm up again but he was happy to do it - he is our own hero."

Murray's mother was with a young woman, believed to be Kim Sears, his girlfriend.

And they posed for pictures in front of the restaurant's tribute to the world number three - a model of his face made of dough.

Murray dined in person at the restaurant the previous Monday, when he again ordered an 11 inch margherita, along with a Caesar salad.

"When he finished he came to ask for the manager because he wanted to thank him personally. It's really nice of him.

"We were all supporting him but we are supporting him even more now."
