A door-to-door salesman fought off a dog which mauled a three-year-old girl and left her in a "very poorly" condition in hospital.
The youngster was attacked by her grandmother's Dobermann dog while visiting the relative in Claverdon, near Warwick.
The salesman, who was delivering leaflets in the area, saw the attack and fought the animal off with a bucket, a spokesman for Warwickshire Police said.
He showed great courage and was not injured, he added.
The girl suffered severe facial and neck injuries and was airlifted to Birmingham's Heartlands Hospital.
She has since been transferred to the Intensive Care Unit at Birmingham Children's Hospital.
The spokesman continued: "This was clearly a traumatic incident for the family and a family liaison officer has been allocated as part of the on-going investigation to determine the circumstances of what took place."
The dog has since been destroyed.
