Brief encounter: Ken Livingstone met Boris Johnson for the first time since the Tory MP was made the party's candidate to run for Mayor

Exerting their influence

09.10.07

It was the first time since Boris Johnson became Tory Mayoral candidate that he and Ken Livingstone had been seen out together at a party. And who else could have brought the two men together but the Evening Standard, on the launch of its 1000 London's Most Influential People 2007 supplement, free with today's newspaper. Editor Veronica Wadley made a speech in which she praised London and the people who live and work here, describing it as "the best city in the world".

Ken piped up to take the credit, saying: "It's all thanks to me." "Not for long Ken, not for long," came another voice in the crowd, that of Boris Johnson. Wadley soon had the heckling crowd under control once more, and revellers partied on at the Design Museum, with canapes provided by Bubble Food. It may not be until May that Ken and Boris get to slog it out properly.

Among the other guests were Shami Chakrabarti, Sir Simon Milton, divorce lawyer Fiona Shackleton, Baroness Valentine, London Underground boss Tim O'Toole and Dan Snow. Everyone was given a name badge to wear however Boris Johnson felt no need for one. "But everyone knows my name," he explained.
