Cutting up rough: the brutal NFL showdown at Wembley has damaged the pitch

Wembley pitch fear

Matthew Beard, Evening Standard
29 Oct 2007

Wembley groundsmen face a race against time to get the pitch back in playing condition for England's crunch clash with Croatia after yesterday's NFL match wrecked the surface.

The turf had not taken such a battering since the three play-off finals in the spring and now has just three weeks to recover before England's Euro 2008 qualifier on 21 November.

American football bosses said today there was a "huge prospect" of returning to London next year despite the pitch cutting up rough for the NFL's first regular season game outside North America.

Hours of heavy rain made for an error-strewn game as the New York Giants inflicted an eighth straight defeat on the hapless Miami Dolphins, winning 13-10.
