New 'umbrella' art installation at Wapping
Evening Standard13.11.07
Umbrellas that look like they were blown out of their owners' hands into a tree form the latest art installation at The Wapping Project.
The arts venue, in a former power station, teamed up with Veuve Clicquot to produce the brollies, above, which are the same yelloworange as that used on bottles of the champagne.
Goldsmiths art college student Sam Spenser created the work, named Bloom, which can be seen in an oak tree outside the Wapping Project.
There is also a five-minute film called In Search Of 137C by Martin Scanlan and a work by Richard Wilson, whose last Wapping Project installation was Butterfly, a sea of sump oil now in the collection of Charles Saatchi.
Yellow 1877 runs from tomorrow until 21 December.

I assume it was sponsored by Veuve Cliquot - if so, good for them. Seeing this art merely as an advert for champagne... how sad.

Scanlans film 137c was the highlight of this show for me, but the umbrellas are pretty cool too.

A modern take on Van Gogh's sunflowers perhaps? And maybe Richard Wilson's sump oil piece referenced Van Gogh's last painting (Crows in a wheatfield)? I can't relate to the title of Scanlan's work (137C?) but maybe you need to be in a position to see it. Living "down under" makes it difficult.

Uplifting? It's an advert for champagne. How depressing.

Go and see it in the flesh - it's much more uplifting and surprising than the photographs suggest. I defy you not to smile when you see it.
