600-name petition against a common market

Evening Standard
07.12.07

A petition by more than 600 customers and traders fighting "inappropriate" development at Camden Passage antique market has been presented at Islington Town Hall.

The protesters want conservation protection to stop chain stores and developers ruining the market's character and turning it into an ordinary shopping mall.

Labour councillor Martin Klute said powers were available to Islington after Kensington and Chelsea council declared Portobello Road antique market a Business Conservation Area to conserve it.

He added: "If we don't act now, Camden Passage antique market will become just another average shopping parade and lose its character, colour and customers."

I think the comment from a reader above this story is actually referring to the steel and glass developments at Camden Stables Market in Camden Town, not Camden Passage antiques market in Islington...

- Sarah, London

Camden market is now one of London's biggest tourist attractions. To turn it into a steel glass anodyne wilderness such as have blighted many high streets througout the UK would be a crime.
