Daniel Radcliffe: Battling to save the Bush Theatre

Radcliffe saddles up for fight to save the Bush

Louise Jury, Chief Arts Correspondent

Daniel Radcliffe, Bob Hoskins, Jim Broadbent and Julie Walters have joined the campaign to save the Bush Theatre from a grant cut which threatens its future.

They are among more than 150 actors and directors publicly backing the tiny west London venue's fight against Arts Council England's proposal to reduce its funding by £180,000.

If the cut is implemented it would "seriously diminish" the Bush's capacity to do its work and serve audiences, the supporters say.

The actors, who also include Paul Bettany, Alan Rickman, Helen Baxendale, Charles Dance, Christopher Eccleston, Alex Kingston, Cillian Murphy, Frances de la Tour, James Nesbitt and Kathy Burke, have signed an open letter calling on the Arts Council to rethink.

Directors such as Richard Eyre and Mike Leigh have added their names as have theatre executives such as Rosemary Squire of the Ambassador Theatre Group and André Ptaszynski of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Group.

The importance of writers to the film world is acknowledged by figures such as Kevin Loader, the producer of Enduring Love and the forthcoming Brideshead Revisited.

The letter says: "If British plays and playwrights are to continue to be the envy of the world, they must be supported and championed in this country. London needs a small and properly funded new writing theatre dedicated to discovering new writers and producing new plays."

Simon Callow said: "To destroy [the Bush] like this is an act of wanton vandalism."

Jonathan Pryce added: "I can think of few theatres that have produced such consistently excellent shows as the Bush has."

Other threatened venues are also garnering support. Shazia Mirza, the comedian, has spoken out in support of the Watermans arts centre in Brentford which has championed Asian arts but faces the withdrawal of its entire £400,000 ACE funding.

"I've always had sell-out audiences at Watermans and will continue performing here. I'll do it on the concrete outside if I have to."

David Almond, the award-winning children's writer, has opposed a proposed £194,000 cut to Pop-Up Theatre for children in London, with whom he has previously collaborated.

"I was hugely impressed by the creativity and ambition of this theatre company, by its refusal to take short cuts, by the recognition of the necessity for children to be offered work of the highest quality."

The Arts Council plans to cut more than a fifth of bodies it funds while increasing grants to others to promote excellence and innovation.

Open Letter from Bush Theatre Supporters

We the undersigned, as supporters of The Bush Theatre, ask Arts Council England to reconsider their proposal to reduce funding to The Bush Theatre. The Bush is a unique and vital force in the development of new plays and playwrights in this country. For thirty-five years it has played a leading role in identifying new talent, developing new plays and producing new work that questions and defines contemporary Britain and our changing world. Last year, over a hundred thousand people saw a Bush production – that success is built upon The Bush Theatre's experienced support and nurturing of playwrights, actors and directors. If British plays and playwrights are to continue to be the envy of the world, they must be supported and championed in this country. London needs a small and properly funded new writing theatre dedicated to discovering new writers and producing new plays. We urge you to reconsider your commitment to playwrights, theatre practitioners and future audiences by allowing The Bush Theatre to thrive, not just survive.

Remember "Duet For One" at the Duke of Yorks Theatre. It then went all round the world (Duo pour un soliste in Paris with Anny Duperey).

I saw it first at the Bush.

It would be a tragedy for this powerhouse of new writing to close.

- Stewart, Paris, France

I have never seen a bad play at the Bush. It is a powerhouse of new writing. It attracts diverse audiences of all ages and social groups. It is a theatre Londoners are proud of. To cripple it with the proposed Arts Council grant cuts is like mugging a productive member of society in broad daylight.

- Derek, London

It is the government of a country that should support arts economically. Actors have to support arts in other ways, like all these actors and actresses are doing. But it is the government who has the duty to support arts, and that's what British Government wants to stop doing and the reason these actors are supporting this theatre.

- Judith, London, UK

Cracks me up. All these luvvies crying foul, when a couple of them could dip into what is merely loose change for them and bail it out. Just like fat, rich celebs campaigning against famine and poverty in Africa...
