Hammersmith and City line train undergoing repairs in Budapest Tube carriage destroyed by a bomb

Tube train damaged in 7/7 attacks ready to return to service

This is the first picture of a Tube train wrecked in the 7/7 London bombings being rebuilt.

It is in a Hungarian workshop ready to return to service on the same route as before the terrorist attacks.

London Underground is prepared for a backlash from passengers who say the train should have been scrapped. Those caught up in the attacks and who still use the Tube could find it particularly difficult to travel on the rebuilt train.

The Hammersmith & City line train was extensively damaged when the Edgware Road bomb exploded on a passing train in a tunnel close to the station. Six people died in the blast, one of four attacks in July 2005 that killed 52 people and the four suicide bombers.

The repairs, which cost about £9million, were carried out at the Bombardier trainbuilder works in Budapest. An LU spokesman said this was because "the manufacturing techniques required for these carriages are no longer available in the UK".

He added: "None of the Tube carriages in which bombs exploded will be used again in passenger service. They have been scrapped."

The carriages are expected to return to the UK in May.
