Who's in and who's out?

Simon Davis, Evening Standard
11.02.08

The energy of London is nowhere more reflected than in the shifting balance of power among its thoughtmakers, trendsetters and leaders. Every week, Simon Davis looks at who's in and who's out

AT THE TOP

IN: FILM
DANIEL DAY-LEWIS, 50
ACTOR

Winner of the best actor Bafta and widely tipped for the Oscar for playing oil prospector Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood. Several critics believe it to be one of the greatest performances by an actor. Day Lewis doesn't appear in many films - he turns hundreds down. Presently, he's the most influential actor working today.

TELEVISION
NATASHA KAPLINSKY, 35
JOURNALIST

Next week the newsreader makes her debut on Channel Five reading the news. With a deal said to be worth £1 million a year, the former BBC presenter is now the highest-paid news anchor in the country. She will present two bulletins at .pm and .pm. Kaplinksy is the new face for a "pioneering" look at Channel Five news. We shall see what clout she has.

UNSTOPPABLE

ART
TANIA WADE, 39
"GALLERISTA"

Her first solo show features the work of Noel Fielding, the comedian and wit around town. The show, above Soho patisserie Maison Bertaux, has been phenomenally successful and guests get to look at the works while eating cakes. Her next artist is a big Hollywood name and set to cause an even greater stir.

WOBBLERS

PROPERTY
STEPHEN HESTER, 47
BRITISH LAND, CHIEF EXECUTIVE

Not good news for the huge commercial property company as it loses £1.39 billion from its portfolio. The company behind the Broadgate development has also posted third-quarter losses of £1.33 billion. With some justification, Hester has blamed it on the global credit crunch and the slump in the commercial property market. But he will need to come up with something to cushion the fall.

SPORT
RICHARD SCUDAMORE, 46
PREMIER LEAGUE, CHIEF EXECUTIVE

Spearheading plans to have Premier League matches played across the globe. Accused of being moneygrabbing and diluting the domestic game.

NEW ON THE LIST

ART
JUSSI PYLKKANEN, 44
AUCTIONEER, PRESIDENT OF CHRISTIE'S EUROPE

The man with the gift of the gavel just sold a Francis Bacon triptych for £23 million. Charming but incisive, the Finn has been at Christie's for 20 years and taking the major sales for a decade. He's a family man and extremely knowledgeable on Impressionism. Said by many - even outside Christie's - to be the most engaging and inspired auctioneer in London. Also hugely influential in persuading collectors to sell at Christie's.

GROWING IMPACT

SOCIAL LONDON
LOURDES, 11
MADONNA'S DAUGHTER

Lourdes has had her red-carpet baptism, appearing with her mother at a Unicef event in New York. She is potentially London's most famous 11-year-old. She has been kept out of the limelight for much of her life - but is that about to change?
