M25: Under surveillance

New digital speed cameras will trap more M25 motorists

Evening Standard
20 Feb 2008

The number of drivers fined for speeding on the M25 is set to soar after the launch of new cameras.

Old film cameras on the western section near Heathrow have been replaced with digital models that - unlike the old film cameras - are capable of catching thousands of speeding motorists a minute. "It's been well known for years that drivers were unlikely to be caught here unless they were well over the limit," said AA president Edmund King. "But all this seems likely to change now."

A Highways Agency spokesman said: "We are currently upgrading the cameras on the M25 between junction 10 and junction 16."

All those who don't like speed cameras raise your right foot!

Honestly - anyone would think breaking the law was a good thing? What is it with you lot? Oh I get it, you only like to obey the law if a cop or camera is there to catch you out?....just stick to the limit and do us all a favour!

p.s No the cameras don't flash if the 'red ring' is not showing, and as to the rather ridiculous comment about 'doing 2mph over the limit' - get a life! No camera will issue a ticket at 2 miles over the posted limit. A cop might...but he/she can use discretion so it depends on your reaction to being stopped.....Perhaps if you remembered the limit is the maximum and not the minimum you should be driving you would have nothing to worry about.

I've seen these cameras.. Intact I was flashed by one by J11. Speed cameras on motorways is just another way for out gov to rape the bank accounts of decent, hard working people. How they get away with this I don't know...

Speeding on the M25!!! Chance would be a fine thing. They spent years putting in the extra lanes around the Heathrow stretch to which I have seen little results and now they want to expand Heathrow which will increase the amount of traffic. This country is run by fools.

Speeding is NOT a CRIMINAL offence, however it is an offence.
Speed limits were introduced when cars had poor safety, handling & design. 40 years on, cars are less dangerous at higher speeds and are a lot safer. Not only that, but it is more dangerous to worry about your speed all the time, than it is to just "drive".

We all know this is nothing to do with safety but another form of tax.

Anyone who breaks the law is a criminal, speeding is a criminal offence and against the law.

The simple answer to all this is not to speed, many people manage it, I'm not sure why others think they're above the law and fail to do so.

Great so we have digital cameras that can identify when you are doing 2 mph more than the signed limit but most car speedometers are only accurate to around 5% +/- worse on older cars. Glad to see another money raising scheme against the motorist. Is it me or the country just going down the pan fast?

It is amazing how the police are more interested in catching out drivers for speeding and yet when it comes to arresting "proper criminals",the police seem to be all in favour of these cameras.
Big Brother IS definitely out there watching us!

So does the accident rate on this part of the M25 suggest even marginal transgressors of the speed limit need to be prosecuted to save lives? Of course they don't. More money raised for a cash starved government and all we do is write comments like these and let the people we elected to reflect our wishes blatantly disregard them.

More evidence of the war against drivers.

Speed camera's do nothing to improve road safety and an awful lot to damage the credibility of police in the eyes of the driver. Travelling at over 70mph is not dangerous, the Germans have been doing it for years and the Autobahn is still one of the safest roads in the world.

Lets get back to common sense traffic laws with real sensible traffic police instead of the robotic thieves hidden in a motorway gantry.

Sometimes the restrictions are left on for no reason, they just forget to turn them off and resume normal speed limits. People will get tickets for nothing. Brilliant.

Instead of catching some folk speeding, some of which will probably be just over the limit, go and catch some REAl criminals, the stabbings, muggings, rapists, need I go on?
