Paddington Basin
Big drain: the waterway installation, designed by James Glancy, lights up at night

Someone's pulled the plug on Paddington Basin

07.03.08

Who let the water out of Paddington Basin?

The giant plughole in the middle of the waterway, which joins the Regent's and Grand Junction Canals in west London, is an art installation to amuse residents while work that meant draining the basin is carried out.

Designed by James Glancy, it lights up at night.

The head of the basin was drained in January so developer European Land & Property could work on the foundations for the 1.8 million sq ft commercial development.

The six new buildings will include offices, homes and shops. The project is due to be completed in 2012.

The basin will be refilled in the summer and the 3,000 fish that were taken out and placed in an aquarium will be returned.

Cor, I bet all those middle class morons were laughing their heads off when they dreamt this up. What wags they are.
