£1m in grants to restore city's historic churches

07.03.08

Almost £1 million has been given to London's historic churches this year to fund urgent repair work.

English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund have donated the money to nine Grade I and Grade II places of worship.

The work, which includes roof repairs, cleaning stonework and waterproofing walls, is part of a £15million scheme to support the restoration of 160 churches across the nation.

Paddy Pugh of English Heritage said: "The grants provide essential help to these time-worn treasures, many of which are only maintained through the hard work of small and hard-pressed communities."

The grants include £362,000 for St Gabriel's church in Westminster, £114,000 for All Saints in Camden, £70,000 for Wandsworth's Holy Trinity and £111,000 for St Giles in Southwark.
