First train in Olympic DLR fleet arrives

Dick Murray, Transport Editor
13.03.08

The first of new trains that will carry spectators to and from the 2012 Olympics was unveiled today.

The £100million fleet of 55 carriages for the Docklands Light Railway will start to be phased in next month with all in place by the end of next year.

The carriages, which are more spacious and have larger windows than existing stock, will also ease overcrowding during peak periods. At first, the new stock will run alongside the existing two-carriage trains but will be made up to three carriages once platforms are lengthened, starting with the Bank-Lewisham branch.

During the Games, the DLR will serve the Olympic Park at Stratford and competition venues at Woolwich, Greenwich and the ExCel centre in Docklands.

The fleet is being funded by Transport for London and the Olympic Delivery Authority.
