Teenager stabbed 'over £1.99 burger'

Rashid Razaq, Evening Standard

A teenager was knifed in the chest outside a McDonald's cafe apparently over a £1.99 Big Mac.

The 19-year-old man was stabbed near the Whitgift shopping centre in Croydon at approximately 9.30am yesterday.

He was airlifted to the Royal London Hospital soon after, where he remained in serious condition.

Witnesses said the victim was stabbed after he was approached by two men who demanded he buy burgers for them.

One witness said: "The two were standing right in the guy's face demanding money. He tried to calm them down saying he only had a fiver. I thought the three knew each other. They were all about 20 and black."

A McDonald's member of staff, who did not wish to be named, said: "I saw three men going at each other with fists. One pulled out a knife and stuck it in the other guy's chest."

After he was stabbed the victim staggered through the shopping centre and into an underground car park where paramedics found him.

A Met Police spokesman said: "No arrests have been made and enquiries continue. We are keeping an open mind regarding the motive."
