Kate Moss: a regular at Punk in Soho, which is backing our Water On Tap campaign

Celebrity clubs join campaign

London's top celebrity clubs and restaurants are signing up to the Evening Standard's Water On Tap campaign.

Punk, in Soho, which recently hosted Kate Moss's birthday party and is a favourite of Lily Allen and Amy Winehouse, has pledged to begin offering customers tap water.

The Standard has been calling for restaurants, cafés, pubs and clubs to make it easier for their customers to ask for tap water, and to end the practice of only volunteering bottled water when taking orders.

"At Punk we have no problems giving customers tap water if requested," said Nigel Carlos, group PR manager of The Breakfast Group. "We know that it can get quite warm when the party is in full swing. Our bar staff understand the needs of party-goers having a good time."

Punk joins a growing list of hundreds of bars and restaurants, including Milk and Honey, 24 London and Wetherspoons, which have signed up.

At present Britons drink three billion units of bottled water every year, and half a billion are flown or shipped from overseas. Transporting bottled water in Britain is estimated to produce 33,200 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to the annual energy use of 6,000 homes. The Standard campaign is also backed by Thames Water, Mayor Ken Livingstone, and a host of London's finest chefs and restaurateurs, including Aldo Zilli and Michelin-starred Tom Aikens.
