Andrew Gilligan was named Journalist of the Year at the British Press Awards last night at the Grosvenor House Hotel.

Judges at the awards, the most prestigious of the year for newspapers, praised Gilligan for his "relentless investigative journalism".

They said: "Andrew Gilligan is one of Britain's most courageous journalists, uncovering abuses at the heart of government and society that affect millions of people. There is no one else like him."

Jeremy Selwyn was named Photographer of the Year for an unprecedented third time.

The judges said his portfolio illustrated the best of newspaper photography.

He was praised for the depth and quality of his work, which included the defining image of a distraught Kate McCann the day after her daughter Madeleine went missing, and scenes of London life.

Paul Dacre, Editor in Chief of Associated Newspapers - publishers of the Evening Standard - and Editor of the Daily Mail, won the Press Gazette Special Award for his outstanding contribution to journalism.

If he is against that red Flag singing party then he's a friend of mine.

Andrew Gilligan is not a journalist, he is a polemicist on a crusade against Ken Livingstone. The front page headline in todays Evening Standard is a classic example of this crusade and is skillfully designed to mislead the reader who is not prepared to read much beyond the headline. This appears to be a crude attempt to pervert the course of the election for London Mayor, and so if Gilligan is considered to be the best by the British Press Awards, then God help democracy.

Congratulations to Gilligan, very well deserved.

Congratulations to the Evening Standard for regularly "revealing" the truth of what's really going on in politics today (or NOT as the case may be!) and for having such a great team that provides Londoners with the most accurate, honest and up to date news in our capital!
