Deja vu: more delays at Liverpool Street station

Liverpool St station closes for third holiday in a row

Liverpool Street mainline station is to close during the May Bank Holiday.

It will be the third successive holiday the station - used by 380,000 passengers a day - has been closed for engineering work.

At Christmas and Easter, work was not completed on time, causing disruption for commuters and those returning from holiday.

Rail chiefs are promising "third time lucky" and say they will reopen for the return to work on Tuesday 6 May.

The station - which serves the Stansted Express, National Express East Anglia and the local London Overground network - will close on Sunday 4 May and Monday 5 May.

This is to enable Transport for London to install an 800tonne bridge as part of the work to extend the East London Line.

The bridge will carry the ELL over the main lines serving Liverpool Street. Network Rail, which was responsible for the Christmas and Easter travel chaos, will also carry out further engineering work.

Brian Cooke, chairman of London TravelWatch, said: "Passengers know that engineering work has to be done - and extending the ELL will prove huge benefit for London - but work must be finished on time."

Peter Richards, TfL infrastructure development manager, said they were keeping disruption to a minimum by doing the work across a bank holiday.

NR will continue its engineering work between Stratford and Liverpool Street.
