St Martins up for sale at £60m

The buildings where the Sex Pistols played their first gig, fashion designer John Galliano honed his cutting skills and artists Gilbert and George first met are up for sale.

Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design has put its central London campus on the market as it prepares to move to King's Cross in 2011.

The college, which is part of University of the Arts London, is currently based at a series of buildings in Southampton Row, Holborn, including the Grade II-listed Lethaby building. It also has a sevenstorey block in Charing Cross Road, where both Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen trained.

Together the two sites cover almost two acres of prime central London. It is thought that the property is worth around £60 million.

The university has commissioned architects Woods Bagot to investigate the potential future uses of the buildings. This could include a hotel and developments of shops, bars, restaurants and housing.
