Armed police seize rapist who escaped from hospital

Elizabeth Hopkirk, Evening Standard

A rapist who escaped from a secure London hospital two months ago has been recaptured by armed police more than 100 miles away.

Terrence O'Keefe, 39, was back in custody today after being captured by officers in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.

He escaped from King's College Hospital, Denmark Hill, where he was being treated, on 15 February despite being escorted at all times. It was the second time in three years that O'Keefe, who is serving a life sentence for rape, had fled from the hospital.

Superintendent Jo Parrett of Great Yarmouth Police said: "This was a carefullyplanned operation involving specialist firearms and tactical units from the constabulary. The man, who has committed very serious offences in the past and has been wanted for some time, is now locked up again."
