Litter louts blunt Met's anti-knife crime weapon
Evening Standard23 Apr 2008
They were set up to help tackle the scourge of knife crime in the capital but the public are not showing much gratitude.
As this picture of a knife amnesty bin outside Notting Hill police station in Ladbroke Grove shows, people are throwing rubbish into them instead of blades.
In fact there are so many old coffee cups, magazines and bottles spilling out that someone wanting to surrender a knife would be pushed for space.
The amnesty bins are part of the Met's efforts to crack down on knife and gun crime, especially among young people.
A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said: "People do use the knifesurrender bins as rubbish bins, so we had them re-sprayed by young people from youth clubs to spruce them up to encourage them to be used for their correct purpose.
"Since 2005 we have retrieved approximately 500 knives and assorted weapons ranging from kitchen knives to swords and machetes."
