De minimis

Evening Standard comment

Transport for London has backed down from its preposterous prosecution of Rachel McKenzie, an Archbishop's secretary, for boarding a bus, unaware that her Oyster card was 20p short of her fare.

Of course TfL needs to take a firm line with fare evasion - which bendy buses encourage - but if this means its officials acknowledge that people can make honest mistakes, that is one good lesson learned.

The policy for fare dodgers needs to be reviewed. Inspectors should use their common-sense in judging legitimate mistakes and those who are really dodging paying fares. This case surely will make honest people who have made an honest mistake consider whether or not to give their correct name and address if a criminal prosecution is possible.
