Theatre threat

Evening Standard comment
09.05.08

Andrew Lloyd Webber has has renewed concerns over the physical state of London's Edwardian and Victorian theatres.

Since most are listed, refurbishment costs are extremely high.

This newspaper has supported calls for some public funding because the theatres are part of London's cultural heritage.

So Lord Lloyd-Webber's case that listing requirements should be eased, to make refurbishment more affordable, deserves thought at the Culture Department.
