200,000 expected in East End for Europe's largest open-air Asian festival

09.05.08

Up to 200,000 people are expected in the East End this weekend for Europe's largest open-air Asian festival.

The Baishakhi Mela celebrates the Bengali New Year and will involve hundreds of dancers, singers and musicians performing in Weavers Fields, Bethnal Green.

There will also be a food festival in nearby Brick Lane.

The first, small scale, Baishakhi Mela was held in 1997.
