Stamps celebrate St Paul's with Wren epitaph

13.05.08

The 300th anniversary of the completion of St Paul's Cathedral has been celebrated on a set of stamps available from today.

A special miniature sheet depicting the architecture of Sir Christopher Wren's building has been issued by Royal Mail to commemorate the last stone being laid on 20 October 1708.

The sheet features the epitaph on Sir Christopher's tomb ("If you seek his monument, look around you") and a single image of the interior of the cathedral taken from beneath the dome and divided into four stamps: two 1st Class and two 81p.

It will be sold alongside a series of stamps showing other British cathedrals, including Westminster.

Court architect Sir Christopher was asked by Charles II to build St Paul's after its predecessor was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666.
