Comment: open bus lanes

Evening Standard
22.05.08

On the face of it, plans to allow motorcyclists to use bus lanes seem likely to endanger both pedestrians and cyclists. But this has not been the result of a three-year trial in Finchley Road and Brixton Road. A study by Transport for London demonstrated that allowing motorcyclists to use bus lanes actually resulted in a reduction in collisions of more than 40 per cent. There have been similar schemes in other areas, including Bristol and Bath, with similar positive results.

Given the evidence it is right that the Mayor, Boris Johnson, has told TfL to go ahead with plans to extend the scheme across London. Obviously, cyclists will worry about the presence of motorcyclists but since the pilot tests have proved that all road users, including pedestrians, are actually safer as a result of opening up bus lanes, that is the right way to go. And if the extension of the scheme does not reduce accidents, then the decision can and should be reversed.

As a scooter rider who has been hit by car drivers twice in the last couple of weeks, I'm fully in favour of allowing us into bus lanes. If cyclists and bikers ride correctly their should be no problem. Being able to make progress without putting your life a risk filtering down the centre of the road must be positive. Only one thing scares me, having to share a lane with the worse drivers in the capital - bus drivers!

Motorcycles reduce congestion. As vulnerable road users, use of a bus lane could save the lives of people using motorcycles. If it saves lives all round then why on earth not?

Cyclists are their own worst enemy, jumping red lights, weaving in and out of traffic and undertaking which is illegal even for a cyclist except in a marked cycle lane. Allowing motorcycles to use the bus lanes is fine, banning cyclists from our roads would make things safer for everyone!

I commute daily around London on a bike and have had two near misses with cyclists and they were both shooting red lights, the danger to the cyclists is their own blatant disregard for the highway code and their non existent observations, not the motorcyclists who would also get hurt in such a collision and who try to avoid them. I would be interested to see some statistics to back up the claims of this cycling lobby as so far it's all very "What if.." and no facts, which contradict the study.

The cycling lobby bang on about how "dangerous" and "fast" all motorcyclists are. We as bikers could quite easily counter that by saying cyclists are all hooligans who jump red lights, ride on pavements and attempt kamikaze undertakes on left turning buses with tragic but predictable results. However, we as 2 wheelers have all been tarred with various brushes over the years due to the actions of the brainless minority

Any cyclists who use the Old Kent Road will be familiar with the daily melee of cyclists and motorcyclists vying for space for the few gaps that'll help them keep moving. this is particularly bad at present due to the numerous road works blocking off large sections of bus lanes. In all the time I've used this route I've never seen any accidents between cyclists and motorcyclists, the simple reason for this is that 2-wheelers are far more aware of what's going on around them than most other road users.

The results showing a fall in accidents during trials to open bus lanes doesn't surprise me at all. if someone can explain what "potential disbenefits" actually are I'd love to hear. It seems to mean "we don't like what our own study has shown so we'll use spurious arguments to discredit them"

I voted for Boris on the strength of this one policy alone, I care not if he makes us all wear kilts and eat fish on Fridays, it'll be worth it

There is no way having motorcycles in bus lanes will make them safer. I cycle to work everyday along the Kings Road and the worst culprits for getting too close to cyclists are motorbikes and mopeds. At least in the bus lanes you get refuge from them. If a cyclist gets clipped by a faster moving motorcycle it will result in injury to the cyclist. It is far better to keep these two apart. I think this is a bad idea and certainly won't make me feel safer on the roads on my bike.
