Bid to recycle 'flatpack' stadium at 2016 Games
Ellen Widdup, Evening Standard27.05.08
Olympics organisers have revealed plans to "flatpack" the main stadium and send it on to the next host city.
The scheme would see the arena dismantled, boxed up and shipped off to be recycled.
Senior officials have begun talks with Chicago, an early favourite to host the 2016 event, and claim the concept of passing on the stadium could make hosting the Games more affordable.
It would see the Olympics become like a travelling circus, keeping building costs down and allowing poorer countries to get more involved. It is also hoped the idea will help offset the rising costs of 2012, which have already quadrupled to £9.3 billion.
A spokesman the Olympic Delivery Authority said a decision had not yet been made on the proposal.

How quickly promises are forgotten? One of the main promises in the argument to win our support was "Legacy." Well anyone could see from the moment the Committee preferred to use a new range (Cost £5M) rather than the existing shooting facilities in South London, and the new range will be torn down after the games that they didn't give a monkey's uncle for legacy. In addition to which the stadium could have provided an excellent stadium for West Ham which would have been used throughout the year and provided a genuine legacy.
