Ealing community centre wins building award

13.06.08

A community centre in Hanwell is the surprise winner of the London project of the year, beating the O2 arena, Heathrow Terminal 5 and St Pancras International station.

The Horizon Centre in Cherrington Road will now represent the capital in the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors' national building of the year awards in October.

The centre, which offers support, education and training to young people leaving council or foster care in Ealing, was described by the judges as "extraordinary". The refurbishment and design of the once-derelict centre involved many of the young people who use it.

Chris Moore, of property and construction consultancy McBains Cooper, said: "The scheme has been immensely successful in improving educational attainment and the life-chances of vulnerable children in Ealing." Last year's London winner was Kew Palace.
