TfL takeover boosts calls for Tramlink extension
Evening Standard2 Jul 2008
Boris Johnson is facing fresh pressure to extend the Croydon Tramlink after it was taken over by Transport for London this week.
The proposal could see a 3km route added to the network, linking the Harrington Road tram stop with Anerley and Crystal Palace.
This would cut travel times between Croydon and Crystal Palace to 18 minutes.
Valerie Shawcross, chairman of the London Assembly transport committee, said the takeover presented the ideal opportunity to make progress on the extension plan.
"There is strong local support for the proposal, which would provide a massive boost for the local economy," she said.
Former mayor Ken Livingstone supported the extension and had started work on the proposal.
Mrs Shawcross said she would press Mr Johnson to support the scheme as well.
"This is his chance to show whether he is really pro-public transport and the environment," she added.

thanks for nothing Boris. So much for being public transport friendly. Typical tory party, favouring the driver's of big 4x4's. Dropping the congestion charge in west london. forget the environment, forget public transport....lets all support Boris, champion of the big car manufacturers
