Woman stabs female cyclist to death

02.07.08

A young woman was stabbed to death by another woman near a London high street.

Dee Willis, 28, was cycling home when she became involved in an argument with a pedestrian in Bellenden Road, close to Peckham High Street.

She suffered a single stab wound to the neck and was taken to King's College Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after midnight.

Detectives today launched a murder hunt and raided an address nearby. They are thought to be looking for a female suspect who acted alone.

They believe the victim knew her attacker and got involved in a row with her at about 11pm yesterday.

Neighbours of the stabbed woman said she had recently miscarried twins. Police said next of kin had been informed but they were awaiting formal identification of the victim.

The stabbing took place outside a Lidl supermarket yards from where Home Secretary Jacqui Smith lives. The area was cordoned off today.

Beyond the cordon, a bloodstained white rag could be seen in the road. A pink pot containing red flowers had been left on the edge of the pavement.

The controller of a nearby taxi firm said a group of 10 to 20 young women were seen at the scene of the crime shortly before or at the time of the killing.

The man, who did not want to be named, added that it was a well-known trouble spot: "It is happening around here almost every night. At around 7pm to 8pm people arrive and start drinking in the streets. They lose their brains and it turns violent."

A bar worker who walked past the scene shortly after 11pm said she saw police talking to a man and a woman who appeared to be distressed.

No-one was at the flat in Nunhead Crescent, Peckham, where it is believed the victim lived with her boyfriend. Neighbours described Ms Willis as a quiet woman.

Steve Phosman, a 54- year- old plumber, said: "She kept herself to herself. I only really saw her when she was walking her two dogs."

He added that Ms Willis had recently been pregnant but suffered a miscarriage, losing twins.

The scene of the murder is also close to where Damilola Taylor was killed eight years ago. The 10-year-old bled to death in a stairwell after being stabbed with a broken bottle.
