Damaged bus in Common Lane, Ealing
Sliced off: the bus and bridge, with warning signs, in Old Oak Common Lane, Ealing

Two hurt as bus loses roof under low bridge

Evening Standard
28 Jul 2008

Two people were hurt when a bus hit a bridge and lost its roof.

The double-decker ploughed into the bridge, slicing off most of its roof despite clear warning signs for bus drivers.

The impact in Old Oak Common Lane, Ealing at 5.30pm caused the bus roof to concertina, showering glass and debris on to passing motorists. One person was taken to hospital suffering head injuries, with another passenger treated for shock.

Eileen Hawtin passed the bus as it went under the bridge. She said: "Lots of glass and other stuff came into our car because the windows were open. Luckily none of us was hurt." The bus was a London Overground rail replacement between Willesden Junction and Clapham Junction. Transport for London said operating company National Express had been using single deckers. A spokesman said: "An investigation is being carried out to establish just why a double-decker bus was being used."
