Winehouse back home after 999 dash to hospital for 'reaction to medication'

Amy Winehouse was discharged from a London hospital today after receiving overnight emergency treatment for "a reaction to medication" at her Camden home.

The singer left University College Hospital shortly after 9.45am by a private exit to evade the cameras outside. A spokesman for the hospital, where she was taken last night after apparently suffering convulsions, said she was in good spirits after a "comfortable night".

The latest scare will reinforce concerns among her family and fans about the health of the 24-year-old award-winning singer, who spent a week in hospital last month during which doctors discovered traces of the serious lung disease emphysema.

The singer's father Mitch Winehouse, who spent last night at her bedside, called the emergency services at about 8pm. After paramedics arrived and began treating Winehouse, police had to be summoned to clear a path for the ambulance through the crowd of photographers and onlookers outside the house, where the paparazzi are on almost permanent stand-by.

She was put in a wheelchair, given oxygen and taken to the accident and emergency unit at UCH, only a short distance from her home. She remained conscious throughout.

Later, Mr Winehouse arrived at the hospital and asked reporters and photographers to leave. Asked how serious his daughter's condition is, he held up a bag of takeaway chicken and replied: "This is how serious it is," although it was not clear whether the food was for him or his daughter.

Winehouse's spokesman Chris Goodman said she had "suffered a reaction to medication".
