Giant arena beside Croydon station is blocked by minister

The Government has blocked plans for a 12,500-seat arena in Croydon.

Local Government Secretary Hazel Blears rejected a plan from Arrowcroft to build next to East Croydon railway station.

The decision came after a public inquiry into the council's decision to grant planning permission for the arena which was intended to rival the O2 at Greenwich. It was to have hosted big music and sporting events and was backed by former footballer Ian Wright and basketball star Luol Deng.

In a report accepted by Ms Blears, planning inspector Ava Wood said there were "too many unknowns and variables to conclude with reasonable certainty that the arena can be delivered".

Arrowcroft could now appeal to the High Court and is awaiting the result of an appeal against a compulsory purchase order which would allow the council to take control of the land.

Rival developer Stanhope aims to start work on its plans for flats, shops, offices, smaller theatre and a park.
