Comment: Park and ride

The number of cycle journeys in London has almost doubled to half a million a day since 2000. Yet our survey today suggests there are only 25,000 official cycle spaces in the centre of the capital. The London Cycling Campaign says the city needs 100,000 more bike spaces; the Mayor, Boris Johnson, has asked Transport for London to provide 13,000.

Admittedly, many cyclists will find ad hoc parking spots around town but they are a poor substitute for official railings. And without a secure place to park, many more bicycles will be stolen - cycle theft has risen inexorably in tandem with the popularity of cycling. Making proper provision for cycles will require a co-ordinated effort by councils as well as train operators, employers and Transport for London. But there is every reason, for the environment, health and cutting congestion, for encouraging cycling: a modest investment in cycle spaces is a small price to pay.
