7/7 victim nears end of marathon walk from bombers' city

Evening Standard
15 Aug 2008

A woman who lost both legs in the 7/7 bombings is on the final stretch of a 200-mile walk aimed at bringing communities together.

Gill Hicks, who uses prosthetic limbs after being rescued from the Russell Square blast three years ago, will walk from Hampstead to Marylebone today after leaving Leeds on 19 July. Yesterday she was joined by Met Commissioner Sir Ian Blair as she passed through Edgware.

The Walk Talk initiative aims to encourage strangers to meet and discuss challenging subjects. It follows a route linking the city where three of the bombers lived to the city they attacked. Ms Hicks, 40, of Tufnell Park, said: "The only way I feel able to make sense of what happened to me is by doing all I can to stop more suicide bombings. Maybe I'll deter someone else from following that path."

She has been accompanied by husband Joe Kerr. The walkers have visited Sheffield, Nottingham, Loughborough, Leicester and Luton and arrived in London yesterday.

Tomorrowthey will reach Brick Lane and on Sunday they will walk the final few miles to Trafalgar Square. The event was organised by Leeds group Together for Peace.
