Notting Hill gets ready to party

Evening Standard
18 Aug 2008

The Notting Hill carnival may not get under away until the weekend, but this dramatic costume preview reveals how the key performers will look.

Huge feathers and "wings" dominate the display, which has been under construction for months and was revealed in a showcase at Alexandra Palace yesterday.

Artists paraded the costumes they have kept under wraps since last year and competed for prizes at a "Grand Costume Splash". Children also took part in face-painting and mask-making.

Michael Williams, of London Notting Hill Carnival, said: "Months of preparation have gone into making these wonderful costumes... [Alexandra Palace] is the best place for them to be seen in all their glory."

The carnival begins on Saturday.
