Lashings of votes for Enid in readers' poll

Enid Blyton was today named best-loved author of all time in a new poll.

The creator of The Famous Five, Malory Towers and Noddy was voted best writer in a survey of 2,000 adults for the Costa Book Awards. She wrote more than 700 stories over a 40-year career and has sold over 500 million books around the world.

Roald Dahl came second in the poll, beating Harry Potter author JK Rowling into third place. Fourth was Jane Austen, followed by William Shakespeare (5th), Charles Dickens (6th), JRR Tolkien (7th), Agatha Christie (8th), Stephen King (9th) and Beatrix Potter (10th). Former Children's Laureate Jacqueline Wilson was in 15th place.
